After a co-worker shared a photo of some feelings flashcards she found at Target the other week, I decided to head over myself to see if I could find anything good and I was not disappointed. From feelings flashcards to felt boards to rhythm instruments, the Target Dollar Spot for this month might as well have been designed by a music therapist!
If you’ve been looking for some new materials to use in your music therapy sessions, head on out to your local Target today! All of the items in this post were available for purchase as of March 14th, 2019.

The Haul
I went to Target looking for a pack of feelings flashcards a coworker had found, but also found a host of other materials that could be adapted for socioemotional interventions:

Do you use felt boards and props in your sessions? Do you want to use felt boards and props in your sessions? Head to Target,

Looking for some inexpensive rhythm instruments including maracas, harmonicas, wood blocks, recorders, clackers, and small drums? Target,

Maybe you need some fun, small goodies to use as motivators in your sessions.

If you’ve got color-coded instruments like boomwhackers, tone chimes, or bells, you might want to take a look at some of the color-themed items to bring some creativity into your session planning. I used this cloth block today to facilitate melodic songwriting using color-coded tone chimes and it worked perfectly!

I bought a handful of the items pictured here as well as a few other small goodies like bubbles. I spent $15 total and got a fresh update to my music therapy toolbox!
Long story short: If you’re a music therapist, get yourself to Target.
